Dylan Thomas Boathouse

The Dylan Thomas Boathouse is a house on a cliff above the Taf estuary in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The poet Dylan Thomas, who had first visited Laugharne in 1934 and settled there permanently in 1938 with his wife Caitlin, lived at the Boathouse for the last four years of his life, from 1949 to 1953, after Margaret Taylor, wife of the historian A. J. P. Taylor, bought the property for the family. The couple raised their three children, Aeronwy, Llewelyn and Colm, there, and Thomas wrote most of his later work in a shed nearby, including the poem Over Sir John's Hill, inspired by the view of the estuary. After Thomas's death in 1953 the property passed through several owners before Carmarthenshire County Council acquired it; it now operates as a museum with rooms restored to their 1950s appearance and a reconstructed writing shed, drawing about 15,000 visitors a year.
