E-1027

E-1027 is a modernist villa on the shore of Cap Martin at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in the Alpes-Maritimes department of France, designed between 1926 and 1929 by the Irish architect and designer Eileen Gray in collaboration with the Romanian-French architect Jean Badovici. It was Gray's first major architectural work, built with an L-shaped plan, a flat roof, floor to ceiling windows and a spiral staircase leading to the guest room, and it blurred the line between architecture and furniture design by tailoring every fitting to its occupants. Its name encodes the initials of the two designers and their relationship: E for Eileen, 10 for Jean, 2 for Badovici and 7 for Gray. After a long restoration completed in 2021 the villa reopened to the public under the ownership of the Conservatoire du littoral, with visits available only by small guided tour.
