Ellen Glasgow House

The Ellen Glasgow House, also known as the Branch-Glasgow House, is a Greek Revival residence at 1 West Main Street in Richmond, Virginia, built in 1841 by David Branch as a three-story stuccoed brick house with a hipped roof and a Doric-columned entrance porch. Novelist Ellen Glasgow made it her home from 1887, when her parents acquired the house, until her death in 1945, and she won the 1942 Pulitzer Prize for the Novel for In This Our Life while living there; her novels chart Virginia's social history from roughly 1850 into the twentieth century. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and was subsequently held for a time by the preservation organization Preservation Virginia.
