Fenestrelle Fort

The Fenestrelle Fortress, better known as Fenestrelle Fort, is a fortress overlooking the town of Fenestrelle in the Metropolitan City of Turin, in Piedmont, northern Italy. It is regarded as the symbol of that metropolitan city and is described as the largest alpine fortification in Europe, covering a surface area of 130 hectares. The fortress was built by the House of Savoy between 1728 and 1850 to a design by the architect Ignazio Bertola, guarding the access to Turin through the Chisone valley at altitudes between 1,100 and 1,800 meters. The territory on which it stands was acquired by the Duchy of Savoy in 1709, after the French were defeated at nearby Fort Mutin.
