Fort Montecchio-Lusardi

Fort Montecchio-Lusardi is a military fort in Colico, in the Province of Lecco in northern Italy, built between 1911 and 1914 to guard the roads of Spluga, Maloja and Stelvio against a possible invasion of northern Italy through neutral Switzerland by the Central Powers. It mounts four French 149-millimetre guns with a range of 14 kilometres, each rotating inside a cast-iron dome, with the fort's two functional sections linked by a curved gallery. The fort saw almost no combat in either World War, remaining inactive throughout the First World War and drawing only a brief exchange of fire from partisans against a German column during the Second, and it survives today as the only Italian fort from the First World War preserved intact with its original armament.
