Franzensfeste Fortress stands in the village of Franzensfeste in South Tyrol, Italy. Emperor Francis I ordered its construction in 1833, but the project was abandoned in 1838 when the area was judged not important enough to warrant a fortress. The structure stood largely unused for more than a century and a half until it opened to the public in the summer of 2008 as a venue for Manifesta 7, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art.
