Galeries Lafayette Paris

The Galeries Lafayette flagship department store stands on Boulevard Haussmann in the ninth arrondissement of Paris, commissioned by the retailer Theophile Bader and built to designs by the architect Georges Chedanne, whose apprentice Ferdinand Chanut designed its signature glass dome; the store, covering about 70,000 square meters, was completed and inaugurated in October 1912. The building's central feature is a 43-meter-high stained-glass dome in a Neo-Byzantine style, rising above a multi-story atrium ringed by ornamental Art Nouveau ironwork balconies, and the dome and the view from the store's rooftop terrace have made the building a tourist destination in its own right. The architect Pierre Patout carried out further Art Deco renovations to the store in 1932, layering a second design era onto Chedanne and Chanut's original Art Nouveau structure.
