The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian and cyclist bridge across the River Tyne linking the Gateshead arts quarter with the Newcastle upon Tyne quayside, designed by the architectural practice WilkinsonEyre with structural engineer Gifford and opened in 2001. Built as the first tilting bridge of its kind in the world, its pair of steel arches pivot together as a single structure, powered by hydraulic rams, to open a channel for river traffic in about four minutes, a motion that has earned it the nickname the Blinking Eye or Winking Eye Bridge. The design won several architecture and engineering awards.
