The Grand Palace is a complex of buildings in Bangkok that served as the official residence of the Kings of Siam, and later Thailand, from 1782 until 1925, built on the order of King Rama I following the founding of Bangkok as the new capital of the kingdom. Its architecture combines traditional Thai forms, steep multi-tiered roofs and gilded ornamentation, with later European stylistic influences added over successive reigns. The palace grounds also contain Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand. Although no longer a royal residence, the complex continues to host state ceremonies and remains one of the most visited sites in the country.
