Frank Gehry's titanium-clad museum on the river in Bilbao, Spain, opened in 1997, its billowing curves made buildable by aerospace software. Its immediate fame, and the flood of visitors it drew to a declining industrial city, gave the world the phrase Bilbao effect for the hope that a spectacular building can regenerate a place.
