Harewood (West Virginia)

Harewood is a historic house near Charles Town in Jefferson County, West Virginia, built in 1770 by Samuel Washington, a brother of George Washington, on land that grew to 3,800 acres by Samuel's death in 1781. Built of limestone in the Georgian style with a center hall plan, a raised basement, and flanking stone wings, the house is said to hold a marble fireplace given to George Washington by the Marquis de Lafayette. Dolley Payne Todd married future president James Madison at Harewood on September 15, 1794, and the house remains the oldest surviving Washington family home in Jefferson County and the only one still owned by members of the extended Washington family.
