Hermesvilla is a palace in the Lainzer Tiergarten, a former Habsburg hunting reserve in Vienna, built between 1882 and 1886 to a design by Karl Freiherr von Hasenauer. Emperor Franz Joseph I commissioned it as a gift for his wife, Empress Elisabeth, and called it his castle of dreams. Originally named Villa Waldruh, it was renamed Villa Hermes in 1885 after a white marble statue of Hermes the empress had placed in the garden. The imperial couple visited regularly from 1887 until Elisabeth's assassination in 1898, and after wartime looting and a 1968 to 1974 restoration, the villa now operates as a cultural history venue run by the Vienna Museum.
