Highland, formerly known as Ash Lawn-Highland, is a historic estate near Charlottesville, Virginia, adjacent to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, that was owned by James Monroe, a Founding Father and the fifth President of the United States. Monroe purchased the property in 1793 and settled there permanently with his family in 1799, living at Highland for twenty-five years before personal debt forced him to sell it in 1825. Before acquiring Highland, Monroe's local residence had been Monroe Hill in Charlottesville, whose buildings are now the oldest surviving structures at the University of Virginia.
