Hildene

Hildene is a Georgian Revival house at 1005 Hildene Road in Manchester Center, Vermont, built in 1905 by the firm Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge as the summer residence of Robert Todd Lincoln, the eldest son of President Abraham Lincoln and the only one of his four sons to survive into adulthood, and his wife Mary Harlan Lincoln. The house remained in the Lincoln family until 1975, when the last direct descendant living there died. The nonprofit Friends of Hildene acquired the 412 acre estate in 1978 and restored it as a historic house museum, which retains period Lincoln family furnishings and a 1908 Aeolian pipe organ. Its formal garden, laid out in 1907, holds more than a thousand herbaceous peonies.
