Hobcaw Barony

Hobcaw Barony is a roughly 16,000-acre tract on the Waccamaw Neck peninsula between Winyah Bay and the Atlantic Ocean in Georgetown County, South Carolina, encompassing more than thirty-seven historic structures spanning an eighteenth- and nineteenth-century rice-plantation era and a twentieth-century estate built as a winter retreat. Financier Bernard Baruch acquired the land between 1905 and 1907, and his daughter Belle W. Baruch consolidated ownership of the whole property by 1956; upon her death in 1964 it became a nature and research preserve under the Belle W. Baruch Foundation. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, Hobcaw Barony today hosts research institutes affiliated with the University of South Carolina and Clemson University.
