Colonial Revival Architecture

Colonial Revival is an architectural style that seeks to revive elements of American colonial building, with its beginnings often attributed to the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which renewed American interest in the architectural traditions of the colonial past. Relatively few Colonial Revival houses were built between about 1880 and 1910, a period when Queen Anne style architecture dominated American building, but the movement became ascendant between 1910 and 1930, when roughly forty percent of American houses were built in the Colonial Revival style. Beyond architecture, the term is also applied to related movements in historic preservation, landscape and garden design, and the decorative arts, and it produced its own regional variants, including the Dutch Colonial Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival styles.
