Beechwood (Vanderlip Mansion)

Beechwood is a Hudson River estate house in Scarborough-on-Hudson, within Briarcliff Manor, New York, whose oldest surviving portion, including the original kitchen fireplace, dates to 1780. The house was remodeled in the 1890s by architect R. H. Robertson in the Colonial Revival style, and was further enlarged with a two-story octagonal library and redesigned grounds by William Welles Bosworth after banker Frank A. Vanderlip and his wife Narcissa Cox Vanderlip bought the property in 1906. Under the Vanderlips the estate grew from 23 to 125 acres and the house came to hold more than 100 interior rooms behind multiple porticoed entrances, porches and verandas, hosting presidents and industrialists as guests. It is a contributing property of the Scarborough Historic District and was later converted into a 37 unit condominium complex.
