Hong Kong International Airport is an airport on the reclaimed island of Chek Lap Kok in Hong Kong, its passenger terminal designed by Foster and Partners as part of a consortium led by Mott Connell, and opened on July 6, 1998 after six years of construction. At around 570,000 square meters, the terminal was among the largest airport buildings in the world at its opening, built with a long, gently vaulted roof and glazed sides designed to break away safely under extreme wind loads so the structure could withstand a typhoon. Sky bridges connect the terminal to satellite concourses over taxiways wide enough for an Airbus A380 to pass beneath. The airport replaced the former Kai Tak Airport and has since expanded with additional terminals and a third runway.
