An ijang is a terraced hillfort settlement built by the Ivatan people on hilltops and ridges across the Batanes Islands of the Philippines. Built on elevated, defensible terrain, ijangs served as fortresses and refuges the Ivatan could retreat to during conflict with rival clans; according to oral history, people under attack climbed to the top of an ijang for safety and defended themselves there by throwing stones down at attackers below.
