The James C. Flood Mansion stands at 1000 California Street atop Nob Hill in San Francisco, built in 1886 to a design by Augustus Laver and Willis Polk as a townhouse for the silver baron James C. Flood. Faced in brownstone quarried in Connecticut, it was the first brownstone building west of the Mississippi River and the only mansion on Nob Hill to survive the 1906 earthquake and fire with its structure intact. The Neoclassical building occupies a full city block and now houses the Pacific Union Club, and it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
