Jerusalemhaus

The Jerusalemhaus is a house museum at Schillerplatz 5 in Wetzlar, Germany. On October 30, 1772, Braunschweig legation secretary Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem shot himself in a two room apartment on the building's second floor, an event Goethe, who had known him personally, drew on when he immortalized Jerusalem as the suicidal Werther in his novel The Sorrows of Young Werther. The apartment is preserved today as a memorial with period furniture and documents, and the building also houses the Goethe-Werther-Sammlung, a specialist library that collects editions of the novel in many languages. The building is protected as a cultural monument under the Hessian Monument Protection Act.
