Johnson Wax Headquarters

The Johnson Wax Headquarters is the corporate campus of S. C. Johnson & Son in Racine, Wisconsin, built by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright with the engineer William Wesley Peters in two stages: the Administration Building, completed in April 1939, and the taller Research Tower, completed in November 1950. The Administration Building's main workroom, built in Wright's Streamline Moderne style, is lit through walls of Pyrex glass tubing rather than conventional windows, and it is held up by concrete shell columns that widen at the top into broad calyxes. The Research Tower alternates square work floors with circular mezzanines cantilevered from a central core. Both structures are faced in curving brick and were designated National Historic Landmarks in 1976, after first being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
