Kensington Palace stands in Kensington Gardens in London, originally a Jacobean mansion purchased in 1689 by William III and Mary II and enlarged for them by the architect Christopher Wren into a royal residence set apart from the smoke and dampness of central London. It served as the principal home of the British monarchy for several reigns, and it was at Kensington Palace in 1837 that the young Princess Victoria was woken with news of her accession to the throne. The palace has continued to house working members of the British royal family into the present day, and its state apartments and gardens are open to the public alongside the private residences within its walls.
