King's House on Schachen

The King's House on Schachen is a small alpine chalet built for Ludwig II of Bavaria on the Schachen, a site in the Wetterstein mountains about ten kilometers south of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. It was built between 1869 and 1872 to a design by the architect Georg von Dollmann. The exterior and ground floor are modest, timber-framed alpine chalet construction, but the upper floor conceals an extravagant reception hall that contrasts sharply with the plain outside. Although built in the style of a hunting lodge, Ludwig disliked hunting and used the house instead for birthday and anniversary celebrations. It is now open as a museum, sits beside a seasonal alpine botanical garden, and was designated part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2025.
