A landhuis is a Dutch colonial country house, often serving as the administrative center of a particuliere land, a privately owned rural estate. Dutch settlers built country houses of this kind in a number of colonial territories, including Galle, Cape Town and Curacao, but built them most extensively and elaborately in the Residency of Batavia, in what is now Indonesia. The grandeur of these eighteenth century mansions contributed much to Batavia's reputation as the Queen of the East.
