The Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center on Manhattan Upper West Side in New York City opened in 1966, designed by Wallace K. Harrison of Harrison and Abramovitz in a modernist style faced in white travertine with distinctive concrete arches. It replaced the original 1883 Metropolitan Opera House and, with 3,975 seats, is described as the largest repertory opera house in the world. It serves as the centerpiece of the Lincoln Center campus built as part of a major Upper West Side urban renewal project.
