Mount Stewart is a country house and garden on the eastern shore of Strangford Lough in County Down, Northern Ireland, near Newtownards and Greyabbey. The house was built between 1820 and 1839, with work by architects George Dance the Younger and William Vitruvius Morrison, as the Irish seat of the Stewart family, Marquesses of Londonderry. The family is particularly associated with the 2nd Marquess, Viscount Castlereagh, Britains Foreign Secretary at the Congress of Vienna, and the 7th Marquess, a former Air Minister. Mount Stewart has been owned and run by the National Trust since 1977, and its formal gardens, including Italian, Spanish and Shamrock gardens and the Temple of the Winds pavilion, were added to the UKs UNESCO World Heritage tentative list in 1999.
