The National Museum of China stands on the eastern side of Tiananmen Square in Beijing and holds more than 1.4 million items across 48 exhibition halls, ranking among the largest museums in the world by floor space. The original building was completed in 1959 as one of the Ten Great Buildings marking the tenth anniversary of the People's Republic of China, and it underwent a major renovation from 2007 to 2011 led by the German firm Gerkan, Marg and Partners that tripled its exhibition space behind a facade 313 meters long and 40 meters high, fronted by ten prominent square pillars. Its collection includes the Houmuwu Ding, the heaviest known piece of ancient bronzeware in the world at 832.84 kilograms, and in 2021 the museum ranked second in the world for visitor attendance, trailing only the Louvre.
