Naumkeag

Naumkeag is a former country estate at 5 Prospect Hill Road in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, built in 1885 and 1886 for the New York lawyer and diplomat Joseph Hodges Choate, who served as United States ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1899 to 1905, and his wife Caroline Dutcher Sterling Choate, an artist and advocate for women's education. The architect Stanford White of McKim, Mead and White designed the shingle style main house, with its wood shingled exterior, brick and stone towers, prominent gables, and large porch, while the landscape architect Fletcher Steele later laid out the estate's celebrated eight acres of terraced gardens. The Trustees of Reservations now own Naumkeag and operate it as a nonprofit historic house museum, and it was designated part of a National Historic Landmark District in 2007.
