Nymphenburg Palace lies west of central Munich, Germany, begun in 1664 as a summer residence for the Bavarian electoral family and expanded over succeeding generations into a large Baroque and Rococo palace complex flanked by long service wings and set within extensive formal and landscaped gardens. Its central pavilion and surrounding buildings house state rooms and collections including the Gallery of Beauties, a set of portraits commissioned by King Ludwig I, and the palace is also recorded as the birthplace of King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1845. The palace gardens, laid out and altered over time between formal French and later English landscape styles, remain a public park alongside the palace's museum functions.
