Ochre Court

Ochre Court is a large chateauesque mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, built in 1892 at a cost of 4.5 million dollars for the banker, real estate investor, and yachtsman Ogden Goelet. The architect Richard Morris Hunt modeled the house on the chateaux of France's Loire Valley in a Louis XIII style, giving it high roofs, turrets, tall chimneys, and elaborate dormers, with interiors carrying classical ceiling paintings, heraldry, carved emblems, and extensive stained glass. It is described as the second largest of the Newport mansions after The Breakers, also a Hunt design. Ogden Goelet's son Robert Goelet IV donated the property to the Sisters of Mercy in 1947, and it now belongs to Salve Regina University.
