Old Faithful Inn

Old Faithful Inn stands within Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, completed in 1904 to a design by the architect Robert Reamer and named for its view of the Old Faithful geyser nearby. Built almost entirely from local lodgepole pine logs and volcanic stone, it is considered one of the largest log structures in the world, and its steep multi-gabled roofline and towering central lobby, framed by a massive rustic stone fireplace and hand-hewn log balconies rising several stories, helped establish the rustic style that later national park lodges across the American West would follow. The building was constructed in a single winter season under difficult conditions, and Reamer reportedly worked without formal blueprints, directing carpenters from rough sketches as the structure took shape. Old Faithful Inn was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987 and remains in active use as a park lodge.
