One Vanderbilt rises immediately beside Grand Central Terminal in Midtown Manhattan, completed in 2020 to a design by the firm Kohn Pedersen Fox for the developer SL Green Realty. At roughly 427 meters it ranks among the tallest buildings in New York City, its form built up from four distinct setback masses that step back from the base as the tower rises, each crowned by a spire-like element rather than a single uniform top. The tower was designed with a direct below-grade connection into the Grand Central transit complex, intended to ease commuter access, and its upper floors house Summit One Vanderbilt, an observation experience with mirrored rooms and outdoor glass-floored terraces. Its construction required close coordination with the historic terminal and the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission given the tower's immediate adjacency to the landmarked station.
