Rockefeller Center is a complex of commercial buildings in Midtown Manhattan, developed by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and built mainly during the 1930s under a team of architects working as the Associated Architects, with the firm Reinhard and Hofmeister taking the lead role. Its centerpiece is the 70-story Art Deco tower originally called the RCA Building and now known as 30 Rockefeller Plaza, set among a group of lower limestone-clad office buildings arranged around a sunken plaza that hosts a seasonal ice-skating rink beneath a large Christmas tree each winter. The complex also includes Radio City Music Hall, and its lobbies and building facades carry extensive Art Deco sculpture and relief work commissioned specifically for the site. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
