The Royal Palace of Stockholm is the official residence of the Swedish monarch, used for state ceremonies, offices and receptions, though the reigning royal family lives at Drottningholm Palace outside the city. It stands on the site of the medieval Tre Kronor castle, which burned down in 1697, and was rebuilt as an Italian-influenced Baroque palace designed by the architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger, largely completed by the 1750s. The palace contains more than six hundred rooms, making it one of the largest palaces in Europe by room count, and it houses the Royal Armoury and the Royal Treasury.
