Smith's Fort Plantation

Smith's Fort Plantation is a historic house and property in Surry County, Virginia, named for a fort built by Captain John Smith in 1609 across the James River from Jamestown, which was soon abandoned due to dry rot and rats. The land later passed to John Rolfe as part of Pocahontas's dowry from Chief Powhatan. The current main house, also called the Faulcon House, was built around 1765 by Jacob Faulcon; earlier accounts placed its construction in the mid-1600s, but archaeological evidence supports the later date. Operated today as a museum by Preservation Virginia, the house displays furnishings from the late sixteenth through early eighteenth centuries and hosts an annual Christmas festival of crafts.
