Stoneywell

Stoneywell is an Arts and Crafts house at Ulverscroft in Charnwood Forest, Leicestershire, England, designed by the architect Ernest Gimson in collaboration with Detmar Blow and built in 1898 and 1899 as a summer home for Gimson's brother Sydney. Its z-shaped plan follows the contours of the hillside, and it is built from locally quarried stone with massive Swithland slate lintels; the roof was originally thatched but was replaced with slate after a fire in 1938. The house keeps original Arts and Crafts furniture, including pieces by Sidney Barnsley and Gimson himself. Listed Grade II* in 1966, Stoneywell was the first house in Leicestershire the National Trust acquired as a residential property, and it has been open to visitors, who reach it by shuttle bus from a remote car park, since February 2015.
