Torre Abbey is a historic monastic building and art gallery in Torquay, Devon, in southwest England. It was founded in 1196 as a monastery for Premonstratensian canons after the local lord William Brewer granted land to six canons from Welbeck Abbey in Nottinghamshire, and by the 16th century it had become the wealthiest Premonstratensian house in England before its dissolution under Henry VIII in 1539. The site passed through private owners, including the Cary family for several centuries, before Torquay Borough Council bought it in 1930. It is now managed by Torbay Council as a museum of medieval and Georgian architecture and as an art gallery holding what is described as the third largest art collection in Devon.
