Villa Albani

Villa Albani is a grand villa on the Via Salaria outside the walls of Rome, built between 1747 and 1767, celebrated as complete in 1763, by Cardinal Alessandro Albani to house an extensive collection of ancient sculpture. The architect Carlo Marchionni designed the building with influential contributions from Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Giovanni Battista Nolli and the antiquarian Johann Joachim Winckelmann, and the resulting complex of temples, gardens and fountains became a landmark expression of eighteenth century neoclassical taste. The Torlonia family bought the property in 1866 and has kept it intact since, and the villa remains a notable survivor of Rome's later urban expansion, still holding its celebrated collection of Greek and Roman sculpture.
