Villa Carafa of Belvedere

Villa Carafa of Belvedere, originally called Palazzo Vandeneynden and also known as Villa Belvedere, is a monumental villa in the hilly Vomero district of Naples, Italy, in the Campania region. It was built between 1671 and 1673 for Ferdinando Vandeneynden, a wealthy Flemish merchant, banker and art collector who was awarded the title Marquis of Castelnuovo, to a design by the Carthusian friar and architect Bonaventura Presti. The design emphasized perspective and was strongly shaped by its landscape setting, looking south to the Gulf of Naples and west toward Posillipo, in keeping with its purpose as an out of town palace for an aristocratic patron. It took its present name in 1688, when Elizabeth, daughter of the Marquis Vandeneynden, married Charles Carafa IV, Prince of Belvedere.
