Villa del Balbiano

The Villa del Balbiano is a villa in Ossuccio on Lake Como, in Lombardy, Italy, begun after Tolomeo Gallio acquired the property in 1596. Its outer and partition walls were largely complete by 1638, and later members of the Gallio family, including Marco Gallio, Carlo Gallio, and Giacomo Gallo, finished the interior with stuccowork and frescoes and added gardens and fountains through the 1680s; the writer Giovanni Battista Giovio attributed the design to the architect Pellegrino Tibaldi, though this is not certain. Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini, who bought the villa in 1787, commissioned new frescoes and had a small church, a tower, and a lighthouse built on the grounds. The property was modernized from 2011 under the French interior architect Jacques Garcia and now operates as a luxury private residence, and it was used as a filming location for the 2021 film House of Gucci.
