Villa Etelinda

Villa Etelinda is a nineteenth-century villa at 38 Via Romana in Bordighera, in the Liguria region of Italy. It was built around 1873 to 1875 to a design by the French architect Charles Garnier for the German banker Raphael Bischoffsheim, who originally named it Villa Bischoffsheim; a later Scottish owner renamed it in 1896. The villa retains Garnier's slender tower and its polychrome mosaic decoration, reminiscent of Moorish ornament, on both facade and tower, along with a mosaic-floored entrance hall and a notable staircase; its garden was laid out by the Prussian landscape architect Ludwig Winter. Queen Margherita of Italy acquired the villa in 1913, and it remains a protected property under the heritage authority for Liguria.
