Villa Kerylos

Villa Kerylos is a house in the Ancient Greek Revival style in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, on the French Riviera, built between 1902 and 1908 for the archaeologist Theodore Reinach and his wife Fanny Kann. The architect Emmanuel Pontremoli designed it as a reconstruction of an ancient Greek noble house, drawing on the remains of houses excavated on the island of Delos and arranged around a central peristyle courtyard, with further touches recalling Rome, Pompeii, and Egypt. Its name comes from the Greek word for halcyon or kingfisher, a bird associated with good fortune in Greek mythology. Reinach left the villa to the Institut de France on his death in 1928, and it has been protected as a monument historique since 1966 and is now open to the public as a museum.
