Villa Lante

Villa Lante is a Mannerist villa and garden of surprise at Bagnaia near Viterbo in central Italy, attributed to the architect Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, known for its cascades, fountains and grottoes. It consists of two nearly identical square buildings, or casini, built thirty years apart by different patrons: Cardinal Gianfrancesco Gambara commissioned the first in the late 1560s, and Cardinal Alessandro Peretti di Montalto completed the second by 1587. The property did not become well known until it passed to Ippolito Lante Montefeltro della Rovere, Duke of Bomarzo, in the seventeenth century. Owned by the Italian state since December 2014 and managed by the Polo Museale del Lazio, it is part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani network and open to visitors as a museum and garden.
