Villa Louis

Villa Louis is a National Historic Landmark estate on St. Feriole Island in Prairie du Chien, in southwestern Wisconsin, restored to its late nineteenth century appearance as the home of the H. Louis Dousman family, whose wealth came from fur trading and other business ventures. The current mansion was built in 1871 in the late Victorian Italianate style on the site of an earlier Greek Revival house that had stood there since 1843. Villa Louis was designated a National Historic Landmark on October 9, 1960 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966. The seventeen acre site is now operated as a historic house museum by the Wisconsin Historical Society, and also includes the related Astor Fur Warehouse and Brisbois House.
