Villa of Trajan

The Villa of Trajan was a palatial summer residence and hunting lodge built for the Roman emperor Trajan near the start of his reign, at a site near the modern village of Arcinazzo in the hills above the river Aniene. Like other patrician villas of the era, it was sited on a high plateau to escape Rome's summer heat, and it occupies roughly five hectares, much of which remains unexcavated. Excavations have recovered fine architectural and decorative fragments despite extensive marble robbing of the site in earlier centuries.
