Villa Palagonia

Villa Palagonia is a Baroque villa in Bagheria, about fifteen kilometers from Palermo in Sicily, built from 1715 to a design by the architect Tommaso Napoli with the assistance of Agatino Daidone. It is counted among the earliest examples of Sicilian Baroque architecture. Starting in 1749, Francesco Ferdinando II Gravina, Prince of Palagonia, added a garden lined with grotesque statues of monstrous, human faced figures, which gave the villa its nickname Villa dei Mostri, the Villa of Monsters. Descendants of the family who bought it in 1885 still own the villa, which is partly open to the public and has hosted a free concert series since 2017.
