The World Trade Center Transportation Hub, known by its popular name the Oculus, is a train station and shopping concourse at the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan, designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and opened on March 3, 2016. Its long white ribbed roof structure, which the architect compared to a bird released from a child's hands, spans a soaring interior hall of interlocking steel arches, though the design was modified from Calatrava's original retractable roof for security and cost reasons. The hub connects PATH commuter trains to New York City subway lines and ferry service and adjoins a roughly 365,000 square foot retail mall, and it links underground to Brookfield Place through a 600 foot passageway that cost 225 million dollars to build. Each September 11, the skylight at the top of the hall is opened for 102 minutes, the span of time between the first plane striking the World Trade Center and the collapse of the second tower.
