Theaters and Performance Venues

A building whose own recorded description identifies it as a theater, playhouse or opera house, a dedicated venue built or adapted for staged dramatic, operatic or other live performance before a seated audience. This group gathers historic and contemporary theaters and opera houses named directly as such in their own description, distinguishing the type from a concert hall or philharmonic building gathered separately below, whose own defining purpose is a musical performance venue rather than a staged dramatic or operatic one, and from an amphitheater, which is an open air structure of ancient or classical derivation rather than an enclosed proscenium theater.
