The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, is the third theatre built on its site after fires destroyed its predecessors in 1808 and 1856; the current Grade I listed building, designed by Edward Middleton Barry, opened in 1858. It is the main home of The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. An earlier theatre on the same site had staged premieres of operas and oratorios written specifically for it by George Frideric Handel.
